What actually happens when you talk to an insurance adviser?
An initial chat with an insurance adviser should help you understand the question, your existing arrangements and what an advice process may involve. It should not turn a short conversation or web page into a personal recommendation. Personal advice needs your objectives, financial situation and needs to be considered.
The first call is usually much less dramatic than people expect. It is a chance to say what you are trying to sort out, ask plain questions and work out whether a deeper advice process is useful. General information can explain the moving parts. Personal advice is different because it considers your own objectives, financial situation and needs.
The first conversation: get the question on the table
You might be wondering what cover is in super, whether a mortgage changed the picture or what a policy term means. A good first chat should separate the question from the answer. No one should treat a short website visit or a quick conversation as proof that a particular product suits you.
If you choose to explore it further
The next steps can involve understanding your circumstances, existing cover and the options available through the advice process. This is where policy wording, underwriting, costs, exclusions and definitions become more specific. You should have time to ask questions and consider whether anything discussed is appropriate for you.
The parts people are often nervous to ask about
Ask how the process works, what documents are useful, what the likely next step is and how the adviser is authorised. Ask for an explanation in normal language if you are not following. The right time to ask about a waiting period, a TPD definition or what is in super is before a decision, not after a claim.
For more background, read the cover review checklist and PDS, TMD and FSG explained. Any product discussion is subject to policy terms and the appropriate advice process.

A resource page can explain the moving parts, but it does not know your situation. A short conversation can help you decide what is worth looking at next.
